In the morning, go from good to great with a few simple yoga poses. By engaging core muscles, you can quickly and effectively get the boost of energy you need to get going in the morning—all before you’ve had a sip of coffee.



Let’s get moo-ving! Cat-cow pose is perfect to start with because it opens your spine so your whole body feels aligned. In the middle of your bed, get on all fours and inhale while arching your back. As your stomach drops down and your head lifts up to the ceiling, exhale deeply. Repeat this move several times and feel your body awaken.

Now that your body is tingling with energy, step down from your bed and move onto your hands and knees. Your knees should be directly below your hips and you should place your hands slightly above your shoulders. Push your hands firmly into the ground as you lift your knees and tailbone up. This will stretch your hamstrings and energize your entire body. Keep this pose for up to a minute and stretch your way to a more energized morning.

Before you get ready for work, here’s one more pose that’s especially helpful if you sit at a desk all day. Reverse plank pose helps correct your posture by opening your chest and engaging your core. Extend your legs in front of you with your feet together and your hands on the ground with your fingers pointing forward. Take a breath pull your hips upward as you let your head drop back. Your shoulders should roll back and you should feel your chest open.

Stretching your body as soon as you wake up is the key to relaxing muscles and sending energy throughout your body for a better morning. If there are other yoga poses you know and like, feel free to change it up.
